Corinne Bailey Rae – The Heart Speaks in Whispers

Confession time, I suppose.  I never listened to Corinne Bailey Rae before this album.  I mean of course I know “Just Like A Star” and “Put Your Record On” and they’re really good songs and she has a really great voice but I wasn’t doing much neo soul after Anthony Hamilton.  So I never put much effort into listening to Corinne.

But this new CD is out AND she’s going to be on tour with Alabama Shakes so I figured I’d do my prep work and have a listen to her newest release, The Heart Speaks in Whispers.

I expected it to be really slow and really mellow and whispery, and some of it is, but it’s not as lulling as I anticipated.  I really liked it and it would fit in line with my Norah Jones and Sara Bareilles days where you want to sit write a rom-com for the music to be in the soundtrack.

It’s 12 tracks total, which is just enough (deluxe edition has 16).  I checked the track list and while there are no features, she did work with Pino Palladino (John Mayer Trio!!!), Esperanza Spalding, and a few other producers that have been in the soul game a long time.  I’m adding this one to my Spotify regulars because I really could see myself listening to it a lot.  Like repeat all day at the office. My favorite tracks (right now) are “Been to the  Moon”, “Green Aphrodisiac”, and “Do You Ever Think of Me” (PEAK Rom-Com post-breakup montage song).

Extra extra looking forward to the concert this fall!!! If you like mellow souly humming and swaying music, definetly give this one a go.

On Spotify, Amazon, iTunes, and real life record stores (SHOP LOCAL).  From what I can tell you can order a signed deluxe CD from Amazon.

  2. She's amazing and one of my faves. It never occurred to me to ask if you'd listened. Check out her cover of Is This Love.
