Addy Lately

Addy turns 6 in two weeks. I’m not going to be like OMG Kindergarten is the best because it’s still a learning experience for us.  But then again, that’s all parenting has been so far.

I’ve been more selective on what i share online and will usually ask her if she is okay with me posting a picture to Facebook.  I know she doesn’t *know* what Facebook is, but she knows all the adults have it on her phone and sometimes she can see me on there and sometimes she sees herself from when she was a little baby.  Fun times.

She’s very much into Michael Jordan shoes and someone on TV told her that Disneyworld is a thing so she’s like “we went on the boat so why can’t we just get on a plane”. Um no.  She loves Lip Smackers and roller blades.  The party will be Troll themed.

Obsessive TV watching has evolved from Bubble Guppies and Sofia the First to Amazing World of Gumball, Teen Titans Go!, and the fn Octonauts.  I’ll watch the first two because I feel they were written by white boys I went to middle school with.  But Octonauts is just an educational show about underwater animals.  It’s not even bad I’m just tired of it.  And she goes “I’m on season 3.” But who I am to judge anyone’s Netflix binge?

We’ve also had to have talks about how some kids are just different.  Addy’s school is dual language so there’s a large percentage of children that speak Spanish.  She’s learned from day one that some kids just speak a different language.  I’ve seen a few Muslim kids at her campus.  I watch the news every morning so she’s seen and understands that Obama isn’t the President anymore and when she they had a vacation day for MLK day, we talked about how it wasn’t right he was killed cause he “just wanted black kids and white kids to hold hands”.

We’ve also had a discussion about bodies and how girls have a vagina and boys have a penis. But she didn’t care about that, she wanted to know what was *inside* and I was at a complete loss so we asked Google to show the muscle systems and that was sufficient.  I also learned that in Kindergarten you say “weiner” but in First Grade you say “balls”.

She’ll give me a #wellactually moment but then I have to explain what a cigarette is.  We’re all learning everything and so much about life doesn’t make sense.  Reading is coming along fine but then that makes it harder to hide when there is ice cream.  She’s obsessed with going “downtown” or “out of town” but Houston is such a big city I have a hard time describing the concept of city limits.

The fish died so we talked about that. She was sad but we didn’t have a Cosby Show moment.  And when my cousin passed she gave me hugs and told me it would be okay.  We also passed the cemetery by our house and she goes “oh hey we have a dead people place over here.”  She’s still 5.

Fun, fun times.  And I’m taking suggestions for the 6 year hashtag as it is time to retire #FuriousFive

And because this is my favorite SnapChat ever, here’s a video:

  1. Weiners and balls? Really? She wanted to know where my mom was buried, so I pointed it out from the car. Then we had a deep conversation about death and zombies. She's amazing!
