Watching

Jurassic Park: The OGs and Peter Quill and them (2022) – So the thing is that you don’t need to have any expectations about a movie. Just accept it will never be 45 minutes of giant CGI animals fighting and eating humans like you dream it will be. One day. But Dewanda Wise* is in it and they are heavy on the nostalgia and it was a little too long but generally fine.

*Slight spoiler – DeWanda does not die

PValley S2 E1,E2 (Starz) – it’s back and they are dealing with the pandemic and it’s not annoying. S2 has gotten into some root work/hoodoo things and there needs to be more Southern Gothic everywhere so I am into this.

The Boys S3 E1-E4 (Prime Video) – woooooboy The Boys are back. The thing that I love about The Boys is that Homelander is absolutely insane and a proper villain. Like, I love Loki, I truly do, but he was an anti-hero at worst (even all those times he stabbed Thor). Thanos was a good villain but we didn’t get enough backstory in the MCU. Joker never kills Batman. Harley, again, anti-hero. Homelander? Insane evil terror with no redeemable qualities and no hero arc. Perfection.

Under the Banner of Heaven (Hulu) Limited Series (7 episodes) – Okay so Andrew Garfield is a Mormon detective in a Mormon Utah town. It’s 1981ish and a young Mormon mother and her daughter have been brutally murdered and all initial evidence is pointing to someone within the Church. And he has to deal with a moral crisis while solving the crime. I was expecting Mare of Mormontown. It’s closer to True Detective S1 (which is not too far off from Mare, but a little slower pace?) But they interslice the murder investigation with the life of Joseph Smith (the Mormon prophet). Now I steer a bit clear from Mormon things because 1 – no religion makes sense, especially on paper, and 2 – they didn’t let Black people be Mormon until the 70s. My friend advised that Gladys Knight is a Mormon and I…truly need to sit with this. But this is an okay show. Andrew is great but I did not love it.

Keep Sweet : Pray and Obey (Netflix) 4 episodes – A docuseries on a Fundamentalist Mormon prophet that recently (like 2008?) got arrested for underage marriages and trafficking. “Sitting with” Mormon stuff means watching a docuseries on it right after watching a functionalization of a LDS murder.

Ms. Marvel S1E1 (Disney+) – I know they change her powers from the book to the series but this series is very Asian (Kamala is Muslim and I think 1st generation Pakistani-American) and very current and adorable. She is obsessed with Captain Marvel and gets powers. I know she will be involved in the new new Captain Marvel movie but that’s all I got.

The Flash (WB/CW??) – Since Addy is home and I am home, we picked The Flash for our summer show to watch on my lunch break. I was going to say I don’t watch any DC shows but that is a lie because I got very excited when I saw Harley Quinn will be back this summer. I loved Peacemaker. I just do not do DC movies, except I also watched Suicide Squads and both Wonder Woman and like 3 of the 5 Batmans…I just don’t do Justice League. Anyway there are 7 seasons of The Flash? Like how?! And we are watching them on Netflix. (TV) Barry Allen is adorable and I’d kill for him.

Reading

The Unsinkable Greta James – Jennifer E. Smith. Greta is a an indie rock start who reluctantly has to go on an Alaska cruise with her father who was supposed to be going on the anniversary cruise with her mother who recently passed away. It was an incredibly easy read. A little romance but mostly father-daughter reconciliation. 4 out of 5 stars.

Watchlist

  • Spiderhead (2022) Netflix – Chris Hemsworth has some sort of deal with Netflix and they keep putting him in movies and I keep watching them. This one is like a psychological thriller? June 17
  • Good Luck to You Leo Grande (2022) Hulu – Emma Thompson gets a hot young prostitute to fulfill her needs. I am very glad this is a dual release to theater and Hulu because I don’t even know where to go see indie movies right now. June 17
  • Hustle (2022) Netflix – Adam Sandler (also mega Netflix deal holder) is married to Queen Latifah and something about basketball. Streaming now.
  • Only Murders in the Building S2 Hulu – June 28
  • First Kill S1 Netflix – young queer vampire and young queer vampire hunter???
  • Loot – Apple+ gave Maya Rudolph a show where she is mega-rich and splits from her husband and decides to start working at one of her foundations. June 24th

Best Thing on the Internet

Now, I won’t be seeing this movie until Disney+ streams it, but Chris Evans doing this Lightyear press has been amazing.

  1. I got into the CW DC stuff via Arrow (just google “Arrow Training Montage” and you’ll see the appeal), and the fun thing about Flash is you get to watch Gustin Grant go from “Isn’t he adorable” to “OH.”

Then they start adding more DC shows and crossovers and it all gets unnecessarily complicated.
