Untitled Entertainment Post – Oct & Nov 2018 – BreWrites

Untitled Entertainment Post – Oct & Nov 2018

I’m not watching a show that might have been suggested because I keep watching Rick and Morty. In fact, the only show I’m watching in Real Time is The Good Place S3.

TV

Venture Brothers – S7 (Adult Swim)

Venture Bros S7 wrapped up.  I managed to only buy one tshirt from the tshirt club.  (If you don’t know, and I assume you don’t, the show releases a tshirt based off the week’s episode.  That shirt is only available that week.  I have…many VB tshirts.) This season was good and wrapped up stuff from previous seasons but also raised more questions.  Doc and Jackson only gave us 10 episodes.  It might not seem like a big deal but Venture Brothers started in 2004.  I see a lot of people complain that their favorite show takes like a year to come back but I know true pain. I love the Venture Brothers. They also released a giant anthology with writers notes from every single episode.  It’s glorious.

American Vandal – S1,S2 (Netflix)

American Vandal is a mockumentary about two students trying to solve a mystery of who drew dicks on the teacher’s cars in the parking lot.  At first I thought it was going to be ridiculous (and it is ridiculous) but by the third episode I was tweeting “OKAY WHO DREW THE DICKS”?  The second season follows the same filmmaker students as they visit another school to see who the Turd Bugular is.  And we’re introduced to one of the greatest tv characters ever, Demarcus Tillman.

It’s funny. Watch it.

Forever – S1 (Amazon Prime)

I read nothing about this show and I will not say much about it because I think that’s party of it’s glory.  It’s an Amazon Prime show starring Fred Armisen and Maya Rudolph.  That’s all I knew and I knew I was in.  I’m glad I didn’t read about it.  It was a very unexpected show and I devoured it and Episode 6 is perfection.  Anyway, it’s a show about boring love.  It is not a ha ha funny, it’s a dark comedy/30 minute drama with some chuckles.  Just like Casual, I couldn’t say I would recommend it but it’s fantastic and I loved it.

Salt. Fat. Acid. Heat. – (Netflix)

It’s a docuseries on Netflix where chef Samin Nosrat goes into these four basic elements of cooking.  She’s a really good host and gives you Anthony Bourdain vibes where she embraces the culture that she is visiting and asks honest questions and learns and isn’t like “ha ha look at this weird food”.  Anyway it’s shot beautifully and Netflix is <chef’s kiss> on their HD Programming.  Highly recommend. It will change the way you cook food even if you’re not a big food cooker.

Movies

We saw Ralph Breaks the Internet.  It’s great.  Addy watched Jumanji 2 on Starz cause she loves Kevin Hart (seven year olds are his demo now) and it’s funny.  I was surprised.  Jack Black should be nominated for several awards.  Incredibles 2 is good.  Father Figures was not but then again I didn’t expect it to be.

Podcasts

Slow Burn – S1, S2

I started S2 of Slow Burn because they were talking about the Bill Clinton scandal.  Then while I was waiting on the two week break they took, I went back and listened to S1 about Richard Nixon. GODDAMN MAN! Whew.  America is good for loving a criminal (of the white, male variety).  Anyway it was riveting. RIVETING! (link)

(Rachel Maddow listened to it too and it made her do her own podcast Bag Man, which I finished Dec 3 and it’s fantastic so listen to that too.  I’m biased cause Rachel is NewsBae #1) (link)

Serial – S3

This was the best season of Serial.  Serial is the podcast that started me listening to podcast and I didn’t finish S2.  In S3, Sarah spends an entire year in the justice system in Cleveland. She talks to lawyers, cops, the accused, everything.  It’s fantastic.

Books

I Can’t Date Jesus – Michael Arceneaux

This book was fine but it’s not for me.  And it’s not supposed to be cause it’s from a young, black, gay man.  But he’s from Houston and I wanted to support.  So I did.

Music

Anderson .Paak – Oxnard

Anderson is back with a bunch of summer jams despite the fact that it’s the end of the year.  And that’s okay cause I still need jammas.  I can’t say that I will listen to the whole album on repeat over and over but I do like the majority of it: 6 Summers, Smile/Petty, Sweet Chick.  And Cheers is a nice tribute to Mac Miller.

Lake Street Dive – Freak Yourself Out (EP)

This EP came out of nowhere and I love 4 out of the 5 songs.

Also I’ve been jamming this one song from Jamie Lidell.  He’s on a song with Allen Stone and I was like “who’s this guy” and the song Spotify recommended is Multiply.  It’s 13 years old but who cares. Also he’s white and British so…love language.

And I like this song by Charlotte Day Wilson (see also: white, Canadian)

Anyway, I’m looking forward to way more TV watching.  I took a break cause I was doing Nanowrimo in November so that cut out a lot of TV time. Mrs. Maisel is back now (Amazon – Dec 5), Runaways (Hulu) is back on Dec 21.  I suppose I’ll have to watch the last season of House of Cards for closure.  J. Lo is in a straight up Chick Flick, Second Act, out later this month.  Dumplin is on Netflix Dec 7th.  And I really want to go see SpiderMan: Into The Spiderverse (Dec 14th).   It looks amazing (pun only slightly intended).

What are you watching/reading/listening to?
